World's next fuel source could be designer organisms

The initial focus will be on creating "biofactories" for hydrogen and ethanol, two fuels seen as playing an increasing role in powering cars in the future. Hydrogen also holds promise for heating homes and putting juice into electronic devices.

The ethanol thing, to me, has me concerned about the dependency of having a good growing season. I work with a couple people who raise cattle for a hobby and they freak out about rising grain costs. Hydrogen would certainly be the way to go, as long as it could be produced efficiently. From what I understand (which isn't really that much), hydrogen production is only about 33% efficient.
